The Big Walker Mountain Tunnel is located in Bland County, Virginia, and originally opened in 1972. The price tag was approximately $50 million when it was completed. At a length of 4,449-feet, it took roughly 5 years to complete the project. It ended up saving 40 minutes of travel time from Bland to Wythe County so it was well worth the expense as that stretch of I-77 is extremely heavily traveled. Day 86 Appalachian Trail Thru Hike - Waynesboro, VA - Zero Day: Today we would make one of the hardest decisions we’ve had to make out here. We were moving at quite a slow place and after some calculation it didn’t seem we had a chance to make it to the end before it closes. So with regret we decided we needed to turn this hike into a Flip Flop. We decided we would attempt to hitch hike all the way to Maine in an attempt to save us on our budget.
